1 I love the expanded size range rather than a promise for an article on pattern sizing or a condescending recommendation for a book that will teach us how to size up (or down) ourselves.
2 I like that you have original patterns, exposing us to designers we may never have known here in the US such as Liz Lovick and Di Gilpin. I don’t need to buy a $12 magazine to fine a rehash from a book on my bookshelf.
3 Your articles are just so interesting: rigid heddle after I just bought a Schacht Cricket, teaching kids to knit, the back stories of some of your designers. Suggestion: how about a back story/update on Alice Starmore?

1. I love that you are “real”. You have patterns that a normal person would wear in sizes that a normal person could wear. There is nothing you would see on a high fashion runway, which is excellent as most of the time I see photos of fashion show runways and think “Does she not have a mirror or has the bulemia ruined her eyesight!?”
2. I love that you interview interesting people. Their stories are interesting and so are the photos of all the little bits and bobs in their studios. It’s nice to know I’m not the only person who accumulates things just because they strike my fancy.
3. I love seeing new designs and that you treat your designers well. I’ve read some accounts how other magazines treat their designers in a less than stellar manner and it does not sit well with me. It is great that you allow them the rights to their patterns after six months, as it is a royal pain to see a photo of something fabulous only to discover that I’d have to find a copy of a 10 year old magazine to make it as the publishers has the pattern tied up and won’t let the designer reissue it.

Rhian 05.11.09 at 2:59 pm

1) The patterns are a lovely mix of styles, but somehow I find I want to make most of them - they’re practical but elegant. I won’t make something if it’s not wearable, but Yarn Forward seems to have this covered.
2) The wide range of sizing is so convenient. I don’t usually have a problem with sizes, but have a friend who often falls off the lower end of the scale, so when measurements go down to 30″ it saves me having to resize the pattern (and gives me more knitting time!).
3) The articles and columns seem relevant and up-to-date, definitely in tune with the modern knitter… or at least this modern knitter. (Especially when they involve Terry Pratchett!)

1. I really like the size of YF. Just enough patterns that i can really focus on what I might like to knit, a couple of interesting articles on techniques or activities in the field. I can easily see the patterns fitting into my lifestyle.
2. I also like that you feature a designer. As a US reader I don’t always know what’s current on the British knit scene and i find it interesting to hear. I enjoy the peek into the studios as well.
3. I’ve very excited about the digital editions as I expect to be subscribing in the near future. While I love the feel of a good mag (and thank you for printing it responsibility) I find the appeal of a digital version quite strong. I enjoy the cost savings and my family appreciates the space savings.
4. Ok I know you said 3 but I felt like i really had to share that I appreciate your new editor and the direction YF seems to be heading. My former fav mag changed focus and I drifted away so it’s nice to have something I like available.

Keep up the good work. While there are a lot of knitting magazines out there right now I think you hit the spot in ways that others do not. I wish you well.

Saira 05.11.09 at 3:06 pm

1.) I like the suggestions of yarns for substituting as I rarely end up using the yarn a pattern tells you to. (I’m a rebel at heart.)
2.) The patterns are the perfect balance between being easy enough to have a go at but challenging enough to make them interesting.
3.) Its not sealed so you can see what you are buying before shelling out the money. (Although I have a sub anyway, but I avoid buying magazines in a sealed bag.)

6

No1Alicat 05.11.09 at 3:06 pm

I’ve been finding it hard to think of “just” three reasons, but here you go:
1. YF satisfies my ‘need to read’ as opposed to just being something to look at. There is no other knitting mag which offers such in-depth and interesting articles.
2. I love the fact that every issue brings a variety of patterns, from small to large projects, and that with the range of sizes and yarn sub suggestions, it’s always easy to find something I really want to knit RIGHT NOW!
3. Unlike the other UK mags, the YF team understand that not only do knitters come in all shapes and sizes, but that - gasp! - some of them are quite young too. As a result, your projects always seem far more relevant, appealing and wearable.

Now, am I only allowed three reasons….

7

Deadly Knitshade 05.11.09 at 3:07 pm

1. Because it stands out from all the other granma-flavoured UK knitting magazines.
2. Because Yarn Forward isn’t afraid to publish patterns that might be slightly more difficult than the usual run of the mill.
3. Because it’s an independent magazine that is run by people who actually knit in real life.

8

nana 05.11.09 at 3:07 pm

1. it’s on the web and easy to find
2. there is soooooo much info
3. yarn yarn yarn and more yarn

9

Yve 05.11.09 at 3:26 pm

Love all the articles - they’re really in depth and cover a wide variety of subjects. Plus they’re written assuming your readers have more than a basic level of intelligence, which IS a plus to me, since so many knitting magazines are so dumbed down.

Original patterns by a variety of talented designers - that’s a total winner for me. The fact that the deals you do with your designers are far more generous than those done by many other knitting magazines is also a big plus. (and probably explains why you have so many talented designers submitting patterns)

Patterns cater for knitters of all abilities and are often accompanied by tutorials that inspire me to try something new. I’m way beyond needing to be reminded how to increase or make a cable stitch but I’m less scared of trying fair isle after the article you had a few months ago.

10

Kitten With A Whiplash 05.11.09 at 4:01 pm

1. Because the men’s patterns are more fashion forward than the usual US fare.

2. Because the size range means when I like something I can just follow the pattern without a week at the calculator resizing.

3. Because you filter out the dross. Many magazines have more patterns per issue, but fewer are outstanding patterns.

11

Lottie 05.11.09 at 4:04 pm

I have only recently discovered Yarn Forward, but love it because:

It doesn’t just publish loads of patterns that I have already bought elsewhere.

The patterns are actually things that I want to make - they are clothes I would buy

I really like the articles as well!

12

Lindy 05.11.09 at 4:22 pm

All of the above but especially -
1. You treat your readers as intelligent people who are of normal size and mixed ability.
2. Not too many advertisements.
3. Good clear photos and not just arty ones.

13

Bianca 05.11.09 at 4:34 pm

* The colours in the designs are inspiring
* They challenge the knitter to try something new (am looking to knit the Bohus mittens myself)
* designs are not geared to one group only…

14

Jackie 05.11.09 at 4:37 pm

I’m new to the mag but here goes …
1. its about knitting … who needs a better reason than that!
2. I’ve dipped into knitting mags for a wee while never really finding one that fits, I think with this one I might have found a fave as it is fresh and funky
3. it doesn’t seal itself in a bag (soooo annoying), or bother with naff and crappy giveaways with each issue … hmm just realised what I wrote there, good one to put when entering a giveway! Think I’ll re-phrase that to … offers proper decent giveaways that are exciting rather than cheapy stuff with the monthly issues :)

Cheers
Jackie

I’m not as exosed to Yarn Forward as I’d like to be. The stores carrying YF in my area aren’t too near me and it’s often sold out, but I try to stay alert. When I can find it, I devour it!

The yarn sub suggestions make for a better chance that I”m likely to find a good match when I explore my own stash for the perfect yarn.

Several people mentioned the size range issue, but the other half of that is that most of the styles actually translate well across the entire range. Some styles really only look good on our less voluptuous friends.

The whole Point Of View of Yarn Forwrad is different and refreshing compared to many US knitting magazines. It’s in the approach to the knitter. I feel you’ve selected patterns because you think we’ll like them and enjoy making them, not because you want us to like them, although we’ll probably never make them.

16

Jo 05.11.09 at 4:56 pm

My reasons for reading Yarn Forward are:
1. It simply makes me happy - I love nothing more than a nice cup of tea and the latest copy of Yarn Forward - I don’t even need a biscuit!!
2. It helps me relax to sleep - reading inspiring patterns, looking at gorgeous photos and reading about people who have a passion for knitting….definately a prescription for sweet dreams.
3. As a novice knitter it has without a doubt inspired me to want to learn more, knit better, knit more and be part of this exciting world of knitting.

17

Donna 05.11.09 at 5:04 pm

1. I love the fact that there is a digital form of this magazine. It’s cost effective for subscribers outside of the UK, eco friendly and a big space saver.

2. The yarn substitution is a great feature, especially for newer knitter that may not know how to substitute yarns.

3. The last issue had the first men’s sweater that my husband liked and actually wants me to knit for him.

18

Helen 05.11.09 at 5:11 pm

1. You offer a great range of sizes (yes I know this has already been mentioned but it’s true!)
2. The editorial makes for a good read.
3. As a team you’ve turned the magazine into one which you can take pride in, and you offer the customer value for money, with no cheap monthly gimmicks to try to entice you to buy. Great job!

19

KnitCave 05.11.09 at 5:18 pm

1. I love your patterns, consistently YF carries patterns I want to knit. Time and again I knit from YF issues, not something I do with other magazines.
2. Your patterns fit me! None of this … oh I love it! only to discover I need to be shaped like a Rowan model.
3. I really like your editorial, there are always interesting articles and great photography.

20

Teresa 05.11.09 at 5:32 pm

1. Kerrie - I used to look forward to her blog and I still miss it.
2. The patterns - I actually want to knit for “ME” now, not just gifts
3. Sizes - now I CAN knit for me!

this post seems to be all about me! LOL

21

sabrina 05.11.09 at 5:57 pm

1) More fashionable and more sensible than Vogue knitting or Interweave Knits.
2) the expanded size range means I can make fashionable items for myself, and not just knit for my thin sister or my 12 year old niece.
3) available completely electronically, so no shipping from the UK to the US.

22

Sally Greenway 05.11.09 at 6:25 pm

The only knitting magazine worth buying

Have even bought special basket to store my collection in !

Been dropping not so subtle hints for bday subscription ; )

23

Claire Valentine 05.11.09 at 8:43 pm

1. A truly independent magazine that is aimed at the intelligent knitter.
2. A team that runs the magazine like a community of friends, welcoming the reader as a part of Yarn Forward - being truly interactive and available.
3. A magazine - not a pattern book, a promotional pamphlet, an advertising medium - but a good integrated read with projects connected to the editorial that I want to knit (oh that I had 100 hour days!)

In short - please keep doing what you are doing - producing a great magazine that’s different, and continually innovative

24

Ellie 05.11.09 at 9:04 pm

It works on more than one level, when my mag arrives I can quick flick through and ‘ooh ‘ and ‘aah’ over the designs, then I can sit down and read the in depth articles later.
There is always at least three or four things I would like to make.
We’re getting the style and substance that the US have had for years in Vogue and Interweave, but for a British market.

25

Vanessa Hubbard 05.11.09 at 10:19 pm

1. It’s a Knitting Magazine
2. It’s a magazine about Knitting
3. Can’t think of another way to say it’s a knitting magazine, so have to pick another reason - let me see - I love that it is still independent; it doesn’t have too much advertising; it has real articles from people you can actually find and touch in the UK; the yarn choices in the patterns are excellent. Basically it is a stonking magazine.

26

PatMS 05.11.09 at 10:28 pm

1. I love the size range and the way there are patterns which will suit a wide range of shapes, sizes and ages (many of them the same pattern) in every issue.

2. I love that you are all real knitters, possibly even knitters of a certain age and size, not stick-thin fashionistas who are struggling with an iPod cosy because they now work on a knitting mag. You know and understand the craft and you assume your readers do too.

3. I love the style of the mag itself, the physical layout, the excellent photographs (even if the tee was inside out!), the low advert count, the intelligent, informative and interesting editorial material, and the fact that there is good reading and at least two patterns I want to knit NOW in every issue.

4. And I love the misprints too, but hey, I’m a Guardian reader!

27

Samantha 05.11.09 at 11:02 pm

Only three?? OK I will try and prioritise. I have weighed each point up according to its merits. I have conducted a Jeremy Paxman type debating arguing each points case (my hubby was delighted to play this with me). After a very thorough process this is what we have concluded:

1. The ‘look’ of the magazine, from the first moment I picked the first one up I ‘knew’ it was going to be fab! It felt expensive and lush. A classy magazine for a discerning knitters. And the back cover with the details of what is coming next month is a great idea. I just need to grab last months mag off my shelf (anally stored in month order) to see when the next one is due (admittedly I do do this quite a lot - ever thought of a fortnightly magazine? Weekly?..)

2. The patterns ! Fabby original (read this and weep other UK mags) divine patterns in ALL sizes. Beautiful photographs that really show what the article is like (grrrr it really gets me when you only see half of the item or just the back - sorry digressing there). And made in gorgeous yarns and COLOURS that makes you throw down whatever you are doing and start knitting (this goes down well at work I find). What is it with the disgusting colourways that other mags choose (whoops off again)

3. I am torn between the gorgeous choices for : Things we Like, the ‘proper’ Book Reviews and Inside Studio. Think it will have to be seeing inside a knitter/designer’s mind and studio. I love the page with lots of mini shots of the studio.

I am hoping that you do not realise that I have combined a few reasons into each point - phew think I got away with it. Well it was just cruel to ask for 3! Please don’t feel left out ‘Tales from a Yarn Shop’ or ‘News’ or ‘Knitting on the Net’ or ‘Yarn Reviews’ I love you all too - I promise I will vote for you next time. Oh no have just realise I have forgotten the ‘Welcome’ note by Shannon, this is definitely a fave. Now which point can I sneak this into pretending it is part of that one? First one?

28

risiko 05.12.09 at 1:31 am

1. i am an addict and have no control over my addiction.
2. my drug of choice is socks. i saw some sock patterns on ravelry, saw the rest of the patterns, and realized my addiction is bigger than i first claimed it was.
3. signed up thinking, i have become desensitized to the american patterns i have been dependent on, and could use a fresh shot in the foot (so to speak) and it’s much easier when the dealer doesn’t charge overseas shipping and there’s worse stuff to be addicted to…this one won’t kill me (especially if my husband, the yarn nazi, can’t freak out when he sees another knitting magazine in the mailbox).

29

Alison 05.12.09 at 8:04 am

Just three reasons mmmmm difficult but here goes:

1. It’s stylish, not only in looks, but also in content.
2. It’s put together and written in such a way that it feels it’s for ME personally, iykwim.
3. There is a great mix of patterns, designer articles, yarn information and not too many ads - yay!!!

30

Charlotte 05.12.09 at 8:55 am

Why I read Yarn Forward.

1. It’s independent and treats it’s readers for who they are not the typical outdated view of a knitter that other publishers have

2. A fantastic range of patterns - with something for everyone. Infact it’s ONLY UK magazine that I ever want to knit anything from.

3. The articles are far more interesting than any other magazine - informative, useful and fun. Why waste your money on any other knitting magazine!

31

sara 05.12.09 at 9:09 am

reasons why i read yarn forward magazine?
1: I enjoy reading the articles in general - they are in depth enough to satisfy my curiosity but also allow me to do further research if i feel the need to know more (looking on ravelry for all the different pratchgan squares).
2: I love the variety of patterns in each issue - socks, cardigans, baby, shawls etc. Even if a pattern is not to my taste, they can set me thinking about what IS to my taste and why.
3: Lastly, the one thing that really sells the magazine to me are the articles that show how the yarn is made/processed - not just in this country, but elsewhere around the world. They highlight for me the different cultures that have learned how to turn different fibres into yarn in ways that i would never have thought of and also how so many different cultures have all learned to take their yarn and a couple of sticks and turn it into beautiful fabrics and garments.

In short - you make me THINK about my hobby in unsuspected ways that i truly enjoy and appreciate. ( I also like the fact it comes out the day before i travel across country to see my boyfriend so i have the perfect reading material on the train there, and a lovely lys in the town where he lives so i can buy yarn and needles for a project for the journey home!)

32

LexieKnits 05.12.09 at 9:10 am

So hard to pick just three but here goes..

1. You include save/spend/spluge alternatives for yarn! This is such a helpful tool, especially when you are out and about and haven’t got the internet to trawl through the yarn info to find an alternative that would actually work! It also helps us budget for the projects and gives us more choice.

2. You use techniques that we might not have used before, but with detailed instructions and photographs you make us believe we can actually do it and give it a go…and suceed! Steeking…need I say more!

3. You include top-down patterns! HUZZAH! a magazine that has actually realised that this is a genius way of knitting. It allows us to try on as we go and make sure that the garments actually fit, plus it saves us a whole lot of time sewing the things up!

Hurrah for YF

33

Carole 05.12.09 at 9:15 am

All of the above! Very difficult to say anything different but…

1. I used to read Kerrie’s blog and that’s where it all started. There were teething problems but she is a force to be reckoned with!
2. Great staff in the team, steering a great magazine.
3. I feel confident that if I spend money on the yarn, I will get a good result, and that errors will be corrected.

34

sara nixon 05.12.09 at 10:23 am

I have loved your magazine from the start. Kerrie knows me as the gin lady from my email address.
The best bits for me are;
1 - The size selection as I am a larger lady but I also knit for my friend who is quite petite.
2 - The alternative yarn selection. It makes it so much easier to substitute yarn or choose a cheaper alternative.
3 - The intelligent articles and lovely photography. They actually treat you as though you are a knitter with a brain.
Well done and keep on with the good work.
Best wishes
Sara

35

Blue Cow 05.12.09 at 10:27 am

1) range of sizes and wearable garments- I hate the fact that so many patterns stop at size 14 (or even 12). you use normal models who make the items more accessible and less catwalk than something like Rowan. I want my money to got the designers and not on an expensive and highly stylised photo-shoot.
2) you encourage us to go ‘off piste’ by giving yarn subs, reciepes and techniques to adapt, challenging designs that teach new skills, you seem to enjoy the fact that we are florishing as knitters (to use social work speak - you don’t encourge dependancy) You talk to us like adults, you make mistakes too which helps me to remember that nothing/noone is perfect - this is a journey we are going on together.
3) independence and originality - you don’t just plug new yarns, products or books uncritically (this is rare and highly valued). I flicked through The Knitter and was appalled to see so many old patterns reprinted. I love the freshness of the designs that aren’t ‘owned’ by yarn houses, and I like the limited advertising - and what there is relevant to my interests

36

Louiz 05.12.09 at 10:28 am

My reasons are:

1. The lovely patterns, there is at least two in every issue I want to knit which is good, usually over half.
2. Your support of designers who might not be the best known, but who are as good as the best known.
3. Your approachability! If I wanted to ask something or clarify something I know I can go to the Ravely group, or pm through Ravelry, or email directly, which is a really really big plus in my mind.

Not to mention that it is fab and great!

37

anthea hayward 05.12.09 at 10:37 am

1. The patterns are more unusual and innovative than those in other magazines and come in the sizes I require.
2. There are some very interesting articles and technical tips. I may not read them straight away, but I usually come back to them for help or a bit of relaxing, informative reading.
3. The suggestions for alternative yarns to use are very useful - I rarely use the suggested yarns as many magazines use yarns that are way beyond my budget.

38

Trish from Tottenham 05.12.09 at 11:44 am

It has pretty patterns for things that one would be pleased to wear! I have seen before now some very queer designs which look as if they have been scraped from the bottom of the barrel. A pink knitted sun visor? No thanks!

There is more reading in it than its contemporaries - I know that advertising is immensely important but it is so important to get the balance right. A nice big article or two is always most welcome.

I am delighted that it is an ‘independent’ production: it’s wonderful that someone has created the sort of mag that they would like to read.

10/10!

39

tinebeest 05.12.09 at 11:57 am

1) original patterns, in a wide variety: there is always more than one I would like to cast on immediately, in every issue I have bought so far. I’m an equal opportunity knitter, socks, shawls, jumpers, and anything in between.
2) online magazine: environmental friendly and a space and money saver :-)
3) articles on and insights in the UK fibre world, there are quite a few yarnies and designers I learned about through the magazine. I like to support the home-fibre-folks now, from the Shetlands to Cornwall.

40

Elizabeth D 05.12.09 at 12:54 pm

1. I like the British point of view, intelligently presented in YF.
2. I like the eco-friendly paper and ink.
3. I like the page layout and other design features.

41

Caitlin Draper 05.12.09 at 1:03 pm

1. I love this magazine because it has beautiful and unusual designs to suit all skill levels from both well known and less well known independent designers. I first discovered this mag at issue 7, the Apple Strudel jacket on the front grabbed my attention, and the rest of the magazine kept it!
2. The photography is great and really shows the designs so you know what you are knitting!
3. The articles on techniques and designers almost make the mag worth buying alone, never mind the patterns! (I loved the interview with Terry Pratchett, a favourite author of mine!)

42

javede 05.12.09 at 1:19 pm

1. I like how you treat the designers of patterns. I think that your policy towards this is great and wish more magazines would act like this!
2. I LOVED the Terry Pratchett interview! I am a fan of his works and to read about him in a knitting magazine brought together too of my favorit pasttime activities.
3. And of course I like your patterns. Even if I won’t be making everything, they tend to inspire me.

43

Kathy Deutsch 05.12.09 at 2:56 pm

There is only one reason why I seek out Yarn Forward here in the States-it makes fiber freaks out of ordinary people.
The clear photos, the straight-forward directions, the interesting knits are all wonderful. But it is the whole package that makes the magazine so addictive.
I recently took my 24 year old son and his friend on a road trip. They had no reading material, so I handed over Issue 12. In 15 minutes, I was being bombarded with, “How hard is it to make this?” “What kind of yarn is that?” “Could I make this a different way?”. This was coming from 2 young men who were playing Nintendo an hour prior. The guys especially loved the rich paper and the layouts of the magazine.
My husband enjoys leafing through Yarn Forward for the photos and the “look” of the magazine-it is very satisfying.
Yarn Forward and the companion Crochet magazines are a cut above everything else out there.

44

Lorraine 05.12.09 at 3:06 pm

1. The size range of the patterns
2. The variety of the patterns (clothing, home, baby, accessories etc. )
3. The articles about about designers. I like a peek into their lives/workspace. :-)

45

susetheslowknitta 05.12.09 at 4:31 pm

Almost a Sonnet from a British Knitter,

How do I love the Yarn forward? Let me count the ways.
I love thee for the depth of your articles, the breadth & range of patterns, and the height and various sizes on offer.
I love thee to the level of everyday’s Most quiet need of something decent to read, by sun, candlelight and low energy bulb,
I love thee freely as men (& women ) strive for the Right patterns to suit different body shapes
I love thee purely as thou turn from Over-Praise for commerce’s sake and give fair reviews of knitting books instead,
I love thee with the passion put to use in my old griefs of not being able to find clothes that I like, but now I can.
I love thee with the breath, smiles and tears of all my knitting, and if God and KALMedia choose,
I shall love you even better when I’ve finished Apple Strudel and cast on some socks.

with apologies to Elizabeth Barret Browning

46

Carole 05.12.09 at 5:50 pm

Brilliant - it made me sit and chuckle!

47

Alice Dawson 05.12.09 at 6:07 pm

1. YF features original (in all senses!) patterns, in a wide range of sizes, for things I can actually imagine myself wearing

2. I love yarn shopping as much as knitting so I like the shop and ‘overseas wool’ sections

3. I just spotted that you have a green policy - which has the added bonus of no bag (or useless gifts) so that I can actually look in the magazine without feeling like a shoplifter (although now I have a sub!)

48

Charityuk 05.12.09 at 6:30 pm

1) I’m a fairly new knitter but I find YF accessible, not scary. Articles like the hat/sock/shawl recipes are really educational.
2) The writing style treats us like intelligent adults and takes the craft seriously. Other knitting magazines have a patronising feel to them and seem to be squarely aimed at a much older market. Lots of toys patterns for the grandchildren, that kind of thing. And YF has no readers letters/photos. I don’t care that Mabel from Wherever has cunningly made a cardi in dark pink rather than light, or whatever.
3) It’s got some really unusual features in it. TP stood out, obviously, but there are others too. And things like patterns to fit teenagers are a nice touch that you don’t see elsewhere.

49

Yogicknitter 05.12.09 at 7:18 pm

I love the range of inovative and unique patterns that come in a range of real women (and men) sizes with suggestions for adaptation to body shape along with yarn substitutions and best of all the recent addition of the WPI so that spinners can use their own yarn (well one day I will be able to spin well enough to do that).
The fact you can get this magazine digitally and have it direct to the computer the minute it is released and this is a good step to helping with environmental issues and when you do buy a paper copy there is
no plastic bag or cheap tacky crap attached.
But honestly there are far more than 3 reasons that I buy it. Among the others are interesting articles, fantastic and honest book reviews, fantastic photography, challenging patterns and many more.
I also get it so I can flash my name in print and show off the garments I have knit up for the designers to my friends and children in my class and school knitting club!

50

Sarah 05.12.09 at 7:22 pm

1. I like the variation in patterns
2. I love that you give yarn alternatives so that no project is out of budget
3. I adore the articles that make the magazine really interesting.

51

Fubsy 05.12.09 at 7:25 pm

1. I like the way the magazine stands out on the shelves. It looks like a mag with interesting, not run of the mill content, and does not rely on a garish, overcrowded cover to attract attention.

2. I love the alternative yarn suggestions. As I use Ravelry I can then explore even more yarns of similar weights, making me feel more confident about making substitutions.

3. I particularly like the way you obviously read the posts about Yarn Forward on ravelry, and take the time to join in discussions and reply to comments and queries. It makes you seem incredibly accessible and friendly, and I feel as if I am part of something, not just a punter paying my money for a few sheets of paper.

Thanks for going monthly - I might not have found you otherwise!

52

Deirdre T 05.12.09 at 8:03 pm

1. I like the fact that the patterns span skill levels (and make me want to reach for my needles)

2. I love the fact that there are other yarn options listed, it gives me an idea of what kinds of yarn to consider, it makes me think outside my box.

3. I love the enthusiasm everyone involved puts into it. It’s one of the few magazines that I read as much for the articles as the eyecandy!

53

breezily 05.12.09 at 8:57 pm

1. I like the articles and other features that mean the magazine has strong content in addition to projects. I’ve particularly enjoyed the knitting recipes and the shopping articles.

2. I like the original patterns that look wearable, and which don’t assume that a particular unusual yarn will be used

3. I like the tone of the magazine; it demonstrates the passion and interest of the writers, treats readers as equals and avoids forced joviality.

54

Juliet 05.13.09 at 8:06 am

1 I’m sure everyone has said it, but … the patterns are all original, and tap in to the wealth of newer design talent that’s around just waiting for an outlet.
2 love the breadth of editorial. I want to know about the wool industry, stories behind designs/designers/yarns. There is so much more to knitting than just sitting knitting
3 It’s right up my street :) Fresh, clean and clear, and not afraid to embrace the modern internet savvy knitting community without apologising for it.

55

Juliet 05.13.09 at 8:13 am

PS Can we have a “love” button for susietheslowknitta’s almost sonnet (comment 45)! :D

56

Cathy 05.13.09 at 12:17 pm

1.Because it treats knitting as a serious subject, so includes articles which are well-researched and informative, unlike other magazines which simply feature patterns (many of which are not original) padded out with a load of frothy, gushing tosh. In other words, it would still always be a good read even if I didn’t actually knit up any of the patterns.
2. The patterns themselves are amazingly diverse and suitable for just about everyone - with the vast range of sizes, yarn suggestions, degrees of difficulty, etc. You cater for every age range and knitters of all ability, interests and budgets.
3. Above all, you are real knitters yourselves - and it shows( for example by the fact that you include wpi which makes it easier to subsitute yarn). You don’t patronise beginners nor bore experienced knitters. You encourage new designers without forgetting the most famous knitting names. You take on board the comments of readers on this site, Ravelry, etc. Yours is a magainze that is for the knitters rather than for the marketing men.

57

Anna 05.13.09 at 3:37 pm

1. Because it can be read over and over and over - getting better with every reading.
2. Because it inspires me to expand my knitting horizons, taking up new challenges and learning new skills.
3. Because it fires my imagination and creativity and makes me believe I too can create items of great beauty.

I love waiting for my sub copy of Yarn Forward to arrive in the post and while I’ll flick through it as soon as it arrives, I love waiting for time to sit down with a cup of tea and read it from cover to cover. Other magazines I have bought are flickable, but only YF has enough quality articles in it that make it worth dedicating that time to enjoying it.

I love the patterns. Since I started buying it, I haven’t come across one issue where there were no patterns that appealed to me. Sometimes only one or two, but sometimes nearly every pattern. I took my first few issues to my knitting group, and despite being a fairly diverse crowd, almost everyone usually finds something they like in it; many of them now buy it regularly, too.

I love that you are run by knitters, for knitters. You listen to us, you are approachable and you encourage us - by your presence on Ravelry, your willingness to answer queries and concerns and by encouraging new designers to submit ideas.

59

ikkinlala 05.13.09 at 4:10 pm

I’ve only seen a couple of issues so far (and am not a subscriber, so I’m hoping I’m still eligible). I read because:

1) The patterns are diverse and interesting while still being things that I and people I know would actually wear or use.
2) The alternative yarn suggestions are really helpful - I don’t live near a yarn store, so I’m often looking for projects I can knit from my stash.
3) The articles are interesting (and don’t seem condescending like some knitting magazines do).

60

Messy Jessie 05.13.09 at 7:01 pm

1. I first picked up your magazine because it wasn’t wrapped in one of those horrid cellophane bags offering unwanted tat.
2. I keep buying it because it offers me beautiful achievable patterns.
3. I love the ‘recipe’ section where I can use your guidelines to work out my own way of doing things, I am a new knitter but find following a pattern to the letter hard!

61

karen 05.14.09 at 1:51 am

1. It’s patterns are more modern and wearable.
2. The articles are interesting and of the moment.
3. The photography is excellent

62

Hello YF!
Oh I’m so glad you are doing this give away, for the opportunity to thank you & tell you how COOOL you are! (1) I’m a fairly new knitter, and so often get frightened by patterns in a lot of different magazines. I know it’s mostly my problem not theirs, but yet I don’t get that fright when I look at your mag! Because your patterns don’t make me feel like I have to have 30 yrs knitting experience. Your size offerings, what can I say, thank you for being REAL! and having extended sizes. (2) The yarn substition info that you give is really invaluable to me. I have to really stick to my budget plan, & the info you offer not only help me to use yarn I have on hand, I don’t need to go shopping—nor do I have to spend so much time reading labels. (3) Your photography is incredible so clear & actual, the pix are what grab me first when I flip thru before reading anything and there’s just no excuse for pictures that don’t inspire and cause excitement. But yours always do, I can get a real good visual of what I will be creating. Seeing other’s studios/workspace is really something too, its given me some creative and organizing ideas and I feel like the designers are my “neighbors”.
I want to someday have many years experience knitting w/your help & maybe even design & get it in your magazine :) You’ve created a very rounded, exceptional, distinctive magazine……keep up the great work!

Shirley MacDonald 05.14.09 at 8:18 am

There are so many reasons to love Yarn Forward but here are my main 3 -

1) I love that the patterns are wearable. I know that loads of people appreciate the wide size range; that’s not really applicable to me as I fall into the ‘normal’ size range, but I’m definitely not a ‘normal’ shape (whatever that is). The patterns flatter no matter what combination of s/m/l boobs, bum & belly you have & the models are real-looking people rather than coathangers with skin.

2) I love, love, love the yarn subs. Money’s always tight & I’m normally pretty hit & miss when it comes to subbing yarn so anything that’s going to help me there is a boon.

3) The technique articles are fantastic. My intro to YF was the issue that featured broomstick lace - one try & I was hooked & actually wound up making a neck-warmer the same night to wear to my Mum’s funeral next day (it was Mum who taught me to knit & crochet so I know she’d have appreciated the effort). I’ve since started collecting back issues & can’t wait for the next issue’s spinning article.

I could go on but you only wanted 3, right? YF is the only knitting mag I buy - it’s a great mix of good patterns, interesting articles & well-explained tech stuff, plus the editor’s a Pratchett fan so what more could I ask for?

64

Margarete 05.14.09 at 11:10 am

More than 3 and mostly mentioned already, but outstanding for me:

You seem to know that real people do come in all sizes.

You seem to respect the experienced as well as the beginner as well as the adventurous knitter.

The designs are originals and no excerpts from books on our shelves. Expertise doesn´t necessarily go with fame and glitter.

Three hints to suspect you can cope with, maybe even like the real world. What a difference that makes!!!

65

Christine 05.14.09 at 11:49 am

1. I am a total yarn addict
2. I am a total pattern junkie. Even the fact that I already own more patterns than I will probably ever have time to knit doesn’t stop me.
3. YF always has great patterns with expanded sizing. That means I don’t have to spend lots of time re-calculating something and using all those math skills I don’t really have. You guys rock!

66

Louise 05.14.09 at 2:11 pm

1. you offer more than other knitting magazine on unqie desing, sizes and giving us a choice of differetn yarns according to budget - you life savers
2. you are also life savers because i gave up smoking last year and took up knitting as a substitute - YF offers more choice for the ants in the pants cravings knitter - if something taxed me too much, in my nicotine withdrawal restlessness, there was always something else fantastic on the next page to try.
3. i love you guys because you offer so much more than just (pretty bloomin awesome) patterns, its the hollistic approach to knitting and crochet that i love a bout YF and its really evident in your pages - i count down the days until it arrives!

I was in the UK about a month ago and was so pleased to find your magazine. So I bought it–and as soon as I got back to Germany, I subscribed! Among the many ways that I like this magazine:

The format is easy to read and feels good to the touch! The print is clear, the photos are bright and really illustrate the feature. And I like the fact that both charts and word-descriptions are offered for the projects. And the charts are big and readable! You don’t skimp on space.

There is a great variety of projects in the magazine–and within each project, a nice range of sizes offered and yarn options! And I like the styles–even if I might not knit every one (and heaven help me if I tried!)–they appeal to a wide range of tastes. And I’m working right now on the Mystery Blanket.

I like your feature articles. I enjoyed reading about the Kerry Woollen Mill , In the Loop, A Passage to India, the interview with Cookie A; I also liked the “Things we like” and the book review.

I’ve shown my copy at two knitting meetings here, and it’s been admired by a whole range of ages–from the 20-somethings to the 60-somethings–and several hoped that some of the magazine shops here in the Heidelberg area will start to carry it. But it’s also impressive that it is now going to be available on the internet!

By the way, I also like your internet support and the Ravelry group page. Well, that’s more than three reasons!

I decided to subscribe to the online magazine that I download in the reader. I really the road that the magazine is taking. Wonderful, practical patterns with great yarn suggestions. The patterns are easy to follow, and are written with real women in mind. The articles are truly informative, my only complaint is that I would like them to be a little longer, some of them have left me wanting more. I am recommending the magazine to my friends here, the downloadable price is such a practical, environmentally friendly and cost effective way to subscribe to a magazine, not to mention the “great storage” option.

Keep up the excellent work, this is now my new favorite knitting magazine, and I’m not saying that just because you are offering a give a way, I would say it without that. Kudos, and Bravo to you.

69

Christine 05.14.09 at 11:36 pm

I don’t know you very well yet but I intend to get to know you better.
So,
1) I read you because you are new to me
2) your patterns show a nice balance between ‘classic’ and ‘innovative’
3) because I like to support a smaller publication

70

Marilyn 05.15.09 at 8:28 am

It’s all been said before but……

1. Knitting magazine by knitters for knitters and it shows. The technical articles are useful, the designer feature inspirational and the patterns fantastic (and original!).

2. I love the online version - ecofriendly, cheap and practical. Brilliant!

3. It was the only knitting mag I’ve ever bought that I would buy off the shelf without a browse to check if I liked it - I only found a local newsagent that stocked it a few months ago (I’m in Australia) but after the first issue I bought (no. 8 I think) I was hooked. And now I have an online sub (no hesitation there!) so it’s all good!

3.

71

Claire 05.15.09 at 10:50 am

My reasons are:
1. The patterns, nice, modern, intersesting
2. The articles, that introduce me to people and things I wouldn’t know about otherwise.
3. Yarn subs ideas, as you can’t always get what is recommended, and budget is always an issue, to me!

72

Catherine 05.15.09 at 2:32 pm

1) I love that the patterns are targeted at a younger, “trendier” audience than most magazines; baby clothing and novelty yarn-use is kept to a minimum.

2) Yarn Forward is not condescening; it is happy to print more complex designs, not dumb the contents down exclusively for inexperienced or unambitious knitters. This keeps me buying the mag even though I’m at the stage where I design a lot of the stuff I knit.

3) I love that Yarn Forward seeks to empower its readership through articles like “learn to design your own socks”. I often feel that other magazines act like the gatekeepers to knowledge; they will design and print great sock patterns without empowering their readership to design themselves, thereby keeping the readership reliant on the mag for patterns — YF is generous with its knowledge!

These sorts of articles are great for inexperiences and experienced readers alike, and keep the more experienced knitters coming back time and again :)

73

Lisette 05.15.09 at 9:00 pm

There are so many things to love about Yarn Forward and I look forward to each issue! In fact, I haven’t gotten this excited about new issues since my sisters and I had a subscription to Seventeen Magazine as young teenagers. Here’s what excites me:

1. Format - I truly appreciate the article layout and the fact that the patterns are right with the photos/articles, not placed in the back. I also appreciate the yarn options - I don’t always stick with the specified yarn picks of other magazines, but I love that choices are provided in YF.

2. Content - I enjoy the variety of projects presented for different skill levels, yarn and time investment. I love that I can really dig into a sweater that requires me to learn a few new skills and will keep me occupied for a longer period of time as well as the sweet enjoyment of a project I can quickly and successfully knock out. After working on a bigger project, I need something with a little more instant gratification!

3. Design - As a graphic designer, I love color, pattern, texture and boy do you deliver! The beautiful photography sucks me in every time, but I also know that the clarity of the instructions will lead me to success. I enjoy the style choices, these are items I’d buy and fit into my lifestyle as a young woman. I also enjoy the designs presented for men, the men in my life would wear them. (The guy in the kilt was also enjoyable.)

Bottom line, Yarn Forward inspires me! Thank you!

Cheryl 05.16.09 at 2:27 am

When I first discovered Yarn Forward at my local bookstore here in the states, I was immediately entranced by the high quality of the patterns and the beauty of the magazine. I am an avid knitter but I am also an avid reader. I find such satisfaction and respite in picking up an issue of Yarn Forward, thumbing through the pages, and finding an article of interest to read. And that is never a difficult thing to do! The recent April issue (11) touched on issues near and dear to me - eco friendly knitting, small scale yarn producers, the preservation of heritage sheep breeds. I deeply appreciate that Yarn Forward brings the knitting community together in a tangible and meaningul way. You focus on both the craft and the craftspeople, the art and artistry, and the deeper meaning behind why we knit and purl and knit and purl. Yarn Forward consistently reminds me of why this craft means so much to me, urges me to reach deep within myself and find my creative spark, and inspires me to reach beyond my limits - not only with knitting, but with everything I do.

75

Sue Bone 05.16.09 at 9:10 am

1. The wide variety of sizes available as we’re not all made the same
2. the strokable patterns and photos, I just want to make them all
3. The colourful front cover just draws you in.
4. fewer calories eaten than with a food magazine.

76

Mollie 05.16.09 at 2:21 pm

1) I like that most of the patterns are wearable and stylish, without being so trendy that they are out of style before you finish knitting them.
2) I am in the USA so I really like seeing a British perspective on knitting.
3)I like the interviews and articles. I can only knit so many patterns, so having good articles in a magazine makes me feel like I am getting more than just a pattern book.

77

Diane 05.18.09 at 12:56 am

1) I like to see designs from different parts of the world.
2) I enjoy reading articles about knitting in the UK
3) I like saving paper.

78

Ari Ridpath 05.18.09 at 11:26 am

1- I love that I can get Yarn Forward digitally. It is brilliant to take my issue around with me on the laptop and refer to patterns or read articles without my one year old grabbing and ripping the pages! He’s very eager to read too and enjoys putting sticky finger prints on the pictures on the screen.

2- Like others have already stated, I too adore the “learn to design” features. I have never knit a pattern exactly as stated and enjoy fiddling around and seeing what I can come up with. These articles have given me the starting blocks that we all need to create our own masterpeices. (I’ve not created a masterpeice yet, but I’m working on it!!)

3- LOVE that the patterns come in such a range of sizes. As a busy mum and full time childminder I get little time to sit down and resize patterns to fit whoever I’m making an item for.

Keep up the good work YF, I’m a convert from subscribing to another magazine and am pleased to say your magazine is leagues above the rest. Thank you!

79

PICAdrienne 05.18.09 at 4:40 pm

1, cost effective to purchase via web download
2, large size range
3, published monthly rather than quarterly

80

Veronica 05.19.09 at 12:14 pm

1. The photography is beautiful and compels me to grab Yarn Forward off the news stand shelf.

2. The tutorials for both basic and advanced techniques are detailed and informative.

3. Most importantly, the patterns are well-written & easy to follow! There are truly few things more frustrating than a poorly-written and confusing pattern (I have done far too much frogging as a result of those!). I can always read through a Yarn Forward pattern and think “yes! I can knit this!”, and upon execution, it is just as expected.

81

SewIknit2 05.20.09 at 4:08 pm

1/ YF is value for money for the content! a great mix of stylish patterns and interesting articles in a single magazine
2/ Love the yarn details page and especially the choice of alternative yarns on each pattern
3/ Love the look and feel of the mag, I just want to keep re-reading them over and over!

liz white 05.20.09 at 7:30 pm

1 - I love the realistic range of real people sizes. I once bought a copy of a (rival) mag because of a lovely cardigan featured on the cover. When I got it home and out of it’s sealed poly bag, the pattern came in one size to fit a 32″ bust! (Can I add reason 1.5 - you don’t come in a sealed poly bag!)

2 - I love the techniques articles and the way you accept that if we’re serious knitters we know the basics so we’re not buying 6 pages of basic instruction each issue. I’ve learned some great ‘advanced’ stuff from you.

3 - The electronic subscription is such a great idea. I spend far too much on knitting so it’ll be great to save a bit and still get such a fab magazine. I’ll be taking out an e-subscription next week on payday!

Loads more reasons but you only want 3.

83

Kerrie 05.21.09 at 8:17 am

1. Real Women Sizing
2. Great Articles/Reading
3. High Frequency Publication

I must admit, when Yarn Forward was first released I thought, “Another knit mag? How good could it be?” The December 2008 issue grabbed my attention with the cover design, Apple Strudel and the Fair Isle piece, Hoswick Jacket. Since, I have been impressed with the great articles and Real Women patterns. Thank You!

84

Sandra 05.21.09 at 5:56 pm

I had to subscribe because this mag is very inspiring, large size range, and what i find very good - yarn alternatives in different price ranges.
and in every issue are at least 2-3 items i want to make.
And what is most important - the models are wearable for real people with normal bodies .

85

Jess 05.21.09 at 7:52 pm

I confess: I crochet, not knit, so I don’t read YF. However, I was drawn here by the appearance of patterns from Inside Crochet on Ravelry, and I will definitely go out and look for that!

I am drawn to both of these magazines because:
1) I love that the patterns are modern and fresh. I don’t want to make doilies or tea cozies, you know?
2) The other articles included in YF (like how to make money with knitting, or how to spin your own yarn) seem really interesting. In addition to the interest factor, they’re practical and useful.
3) I LOVE the other work I’ve seen from Julie and Amy, so I can’t wait to see what they’ve done with Inside Crochet!!!

Jess

86

Marque 05.23.09 at 1:18 am

I must agree with almost every other poster my main attraction to the magazine is the expanded size ranges! Such a relief to find patterns I can just sit down and knit! without the week of refiguring the amount of yarn and the number of stitches to add to make the sweater fit. (I’m almost 60,and I’m not going to loose 100 pounds). I love that you have a cross section of designers and don’t rely on the selected few that most publications publish over and over, one big publication will not be renewed this year because I’m tired of seeing the same shapes in different colours by the same designers over and over. Your magazine is fresh! Keep it up! I plan to subscribe to the online copy at the first of the month, hope I will still get number 14! I especially enjoyed seeing Liz Lovick’s Shetland sweater,Llamas and camels and goats OH MY!

87

Fran MacHardy 05.24.09 at 12:25 am

1. I love the newness and modernness of the designs, and the range of sizes
2. I love the fact that you will consider deisgns submitted by knitters out here in the real world
3. I love being able to pick up my copy in the local WHSmith and not have to subscibe
Thank you!

88

Kirsty 05.25.09 at 5:52 pm

I love… well all the things already mentioned, actually, but also -

1) Your green credentials - the efforts made to be environmentally friendly
2) The joie-di-vivre of the magazine - the enthusiasm, the creativity, the trying things out (and the hands up acknowledgement of glitches)
3) The patterns - somehow managing to be a bit different yet items I would actually wear! (even if a few are beyond my skill level…)

89

Fran MacHardy 05.27.09 at 12:21 pm

1, I love the original patterns and that some come from people like me out here who are not trained (always) as designers and are usually practical shapes
2, I like the multiple sizes and appreciate that the patterns are for ‘real’ people and not what my son calls ‘ladeesticks’
3, I am LOVING the blanket squares, trust me, my blanket will be huge cos I want to knit all the squares in all the colours!!!
Fran

90

Seema 05.28.09 at 9:49 pm

The three reason i could think of is great fresh style patterns.
The sizes of the pattern and the interesting projects i get to pick or choose to work on.

91

Debbie West 05.29.09 at 6:26 am

1)My idea is to learn more of knit desgn from the magazine!

2) I do not wear a size 12! Not interested in wearing a 12!

3) And I do not want to look my age! I want to be comfortable & in fashion!

92

Cate Bixler-Gartrell 06.02.09 at 4:53 pm

1. Yarn Forward has the best patterns geared for the not-so-novice knitter; 2. show cases great designers and gives a little history about who they are and what they are about; and 3. also goes on to give us tips, hints, and tidbits to get us through knitting on the porch with a cup of tea and good book.

93

Jane 06.03.09 at 10:50 am

1.I found this magazine while I was on holiday, and found the patterns so good I went straight to a wool shop for wool.
2. The instructions for patterns are very clear, and the information on how to knit different stitches is good.
3.I am learning how to adapt patterns to be exactly what I want, so making my garments personal to me.

94

Nicole 06.03.09 at 6:42 pm

1) Have not had to buy any other knitting magasine ( other than Vogue International ) since I started regularly buying yours 7 issues ago so you must be doing something right as you are totally hitting my fix- I always need to knit at least one something from each issue- I run home and often start that evening. I LOVE the fact you give alternate yarns.
2) I like the editorial tone - you praise the expert, support the keen and nuture the novice - other magasines seem to patronise or assume a certain level- you also enter into discussion on Ravelry- you are not an army of suits sat in London sipping latte’s- you seem to be a collection of real people in the real world with whom it would be nice to have a cup of tea/ glass of wine with!!
3) I am loving the mystery knit along- ok there are a few issues but so what - I love solving them, and the range of ideas has been fab so far. I love the fact your things are ‘individual’ and not ‘designer’ if you get my drift? You can be whom so ever you want with your mag!

95

Julie Mackenzie 06.04.09 at 7:47 am

1/ I love your honest book reviews, you really give an unbiased view and an accurate assessment of who a book is most suitable for.

2/ Your pattern mix is excellent, there is always something I’ve never thought of doing eg combining knitting with decorative fabric detail.

3/ I love your step by step tutorials of unusual techniques. I’ve just successfully used the ‘jogless join’ for working stripes in the round and am really impressed with the result. It is safe to say I would never have known this was possible if I didn’t read yarn forward.

96

Bernadette Glorio 06.08.09 at 2:27 pm

1) It’s more than a knitting magazine, it’s a point of view. As a life-long knitting Anglophile you know transcendent greatness when you see it. And Yarn Forward comes out 10 times a year not 2!
2) It’s an investment. When you purchase a knitting magazines you want to learn new techniques and grow in both knowledge and craft. Yarn Forward offers education and insight that leaves you feeling empowered and daring. Downright cheeky:)!
3)It a new Beginning! Just like so many other great publications it draws new members to our craft. From the novice knitter to the more experienced, each issue has something new to try. Yarn Forward encourages the reader to branch out in new areas of knitting and related fiber crafts like spinning. Many knitting publications try to force their readers to use a particular yarn stating that substitutions would be scary and bad. OOOOOOOOH:( Yarn Forward recognizes that there are many paths and encourages the reader to try a new one, just for the fun of it!!!!!!!!!!!!

97

Diana Samour 06.08.09 at 3:27 pm

Since, I live in California, Yarn Forward magazine can be purchased at my local magazine shop. It is a refreshing publication–I love YF attention to detail, in-depth articles, and size & yard guides. The photography is inspiring…I find myself looking at issue after issue just to get my knitting mojo on. Every issue I learn a new technique, thanks to the Tech feature section–yes it has improved my knitting. Thank you greatly for including a little something to knit for the fellows. My guy loves you for it too.

98

jacpurl 06.09.09 at 12:27 pm

WoW! so many reasons so far.
I usually cut the patterns I like out of magazines and recycle the rest but with Yarn Forward I found that I was still keeping the “rest” to read again, so now I just save the whole magazine.
I love the big sizes to everything at least this gives me choice, yea! I may not knit everything I see but I like to think I might! The choice of yarns means I can destash a bit to make room for more!
The original designs are great; I loved the orange young girls top as it was simple yet quirky at the same time. More, More please.
(I knit a lot of small projects for children and love quirky)
I like that when you review a book you may not rave about it. Makes me trust your opinion more.

I think thats more than three but take your pick!

1. Recommendation from Brenda Dayne, “Cast On” podcast. Brenda’s recommendations carry a lot of weight!
2. The photography is stunning. I can see every stitch and the colors rendered in the photographs are luscious. The magazine and web version provide a stunning yet simple background to support the knitting. Amazing work!
3. Pattern sizes include us curvy girls and are fashion forward. Rarely are both present at the same time.

At the moment I can only look at your website, swooning and mooning over the lovely photos of projects I hope to make someday. Liz Lovick’s sweater of natural fibers with rows of animal patterns knitted into it made me wild with desire to get your magazine. As soon as you offer those paid subscriptions for downloads again, I’ll be fulfilled in my knitting dreams! I tried to subscribe a couple of months ago but couldn’t get through the process properly. You simply cannot imagine my angst!

1. I like the way that you give choices of yarns for different budgets.
2. I like the way you champion lots of British yarns and designers.
3. I like the fact that it’s a quality magazine at a reasonable price, and I’m not accumulating unnecessary free gifts each month.

Oooh, only 3 reasons? Toughie! : )

#1 - The patterns are generally lovely items I actuallly want to make, and always photographed very beautifully,

#2 - I appreciate the fact that the designers are treated with respect and are allowed to retain the copyright to their work, and

#3 - I love that it’s a MONTHLY magazine but still manages to offer exciting patterns each month in a quality format!

Go Yarn Forward!!!

Oh Happy, happy day! My local Borders Bookstore did have a copy of issue 14, and I did a little happy jig when I found it!

I also checked your website more thoroughly to find that I *can* order single issues from you even though I cannot subscribe online yet, so my happiness has doubled to be awaiting the arrival of issue 12 with Liz Lovick’s exciting pullover with all the charted fiber animals! Does it get any better?

I love reading Yarn Forward because:
1. I love the range of good quality patterns - no knitted food patterns!
2. I love the reviews of the patterns, yarns, books etc - very comprehensive and a very good guide for buying
3. I’m a (not so) secret string junkie and need a fix as often as I can get it - cross stitch, knitting, knotted bracelets… I’m just as happy to read about them when I’m too tired to do them!

Hmmmm, three reasons? Where to start? The size ranges are amazing,I can make a sweater for me and for my size 1 or 2 neighbor! that’s important to me. I don’t often find a magazine that has that kind of range! But every body says that. Maybe it’s because you offer other yarns to make them up in, I’m allergic to wool and most magazines/designers treat me like a leper because I will not use wool or alpaca, or cashmere( that is the real pits! not being able to wear cashmere)! I love the feel of a new magazine in my hands and this one is one of the best. There’s a heft to the magazine that is comforting. Not a bunch of hands all over it yet…… I like that I know a couple of the designers you print ( I really like their work )and I like that you don’t print the same designers every month. I like reading about what is happening in the UK and Europe, sometimes American magazines act like we(they) have the only noteworthy designers and print the same old designs time after time in small sizes. I don’t think they have come to the realization that we are not all a size 8 and 5 foot 5 inches. (I’m 5′10″). I don’t like being stuffed into a cubbyhole that’s way too small, you let me stretch! Feels good!!
I guess that’s more then three, but I bet I could think of more if I had the time and space. I hope the E-zine comes soon, I will subscribe to your E-zine, but no one elses.

Finding this site was one of those lucky happenstances. It brought me back to knitting after a ten year respite. What fun to be creating useful things again!
Of course, there are lots of reasons I like yarn forward. The three outstanding ones are:
1. There are patterns I can not only follow, I can finish.
2. Things come out in the size I planned on making. They actually fit!
3. The yarns range from very practical to outrageously fun.
Go for the E-zine! I’m waiting anxiously.

1. I love that you offer your patterns in a wide range of sizes. I have a woman in my family that constantly raves about patterns that I have made for myself, however, I can rarely make the items for her because our sizes are so different. Your magazine offers beautiful patterns that I can create for both of us!
2. You offer a good range of difficulty and diversity in your patterns. I consider myself a fairly experienced knitter, yet sometimes it’s nice to have an easy pattern that I can whip up in no time!
3. I love that you offer alternate yarn suggestions for your patterns along with a note of the yarn cost. Many times I have gone looking at alternate yarn suggestions for patterns only to find that I would have to blow my bank account to make it. The save, spend, spoil tips help me know which yarn would be best for my budget!

Being more or less a self taught knitter it is wonderful to find a magazine that is providing the next lever of instruction. Being the size of real women can make it difficult to find patterns that are designed for us. In looking for those kinds of patterns I found your magazine website and and am truly enjoying it. I like the reality of your patterns (you know, thing real women would wear) and the tips on yarn are always helpful.

I have bought YArn Forward since the first issue and really appreciate the style of the magazine - the patterns are always interesting and new - they are unique to the magazine and don’t have to come from a particular brand of yarn manufacturer. I like the “Alternative” yarn suggestions with each pattern
The WPI is also so brilliant, as I have some homespun yarn and also unidentified yarn in my stash - it is easy to match it to a pattern.
All the editorial team seem so interested in knitting, there is a huge enthusiasm about each issue of the magazine. The patterns reflect that more artisitc, creative style and are not trying to be too clever or couture orientated but are more explorations of yarn, style and pattern.
Thank you so much for your excellent magazine - it reassures me that there are people who care about knitting and who see it as a hugely creative art - I’m so glad that Yarn Forward is such a success, thanks for all your hard work and dedication!!

I am a knitting magazine junkie, I subscibe to all US knitting and crocheting magazines. I miss going into the bookstore and picking up a new magazine but I always look anyway. I NEEDED a magazine, so I picked up yours, its almost double the cost of what I usually pay!!!! it was hard…….. but the cover called to be admired, the pages whipering to be opened, it’s not like I didn’t have the money, it’s just I know once I open the cover it will begin, I will probably never make anything out of the issue, I just like looking, reading, anything about yarn. Maybe if I look it won’t be as good as I think, just look and get it out of your system while your here, so I won’t have to make the 60 mile drive back to the store,[ right] that’s not saving me any money. SO I picked it up, it’s heft was so good, lots to read, I know I’m in trouble……… The articles so many, so good, the ADS…. I love all the yarn store ads…….. The pictures are so nice……… You have all the sizes….. forget I said I wouldn’t ever make anything, (it helps to justify the purchase) . You are showing me a yarn store in Europe, this is so cool… My mind clears, and I find myself at the checkout counter with your magazine and I know I’m hooked for life!!! What a great find for me, I now purchase all the UK magazines…….at the bookstore, Yours is just so… so… so… much of everything a magazine junkie yarns for. Thank You!!!!!!!

1. I am a butterfly customer, I float from mag to mag attracted by the patterns, yarn and colours in the mags. But when I clear out the flat of old mags to make room for new ones (I have to be strict these days!) all the other mags have patterns cut-out-and-filed with everything else recycled. YF is the ONLY mag (of all my needlecraft mags) to retain its book-like status. Each issue is more like a mini-book than a mag :)
2. Everything in it is fresh each time you pick up the mag for inspiration. Each article, specially designed pattern, feature, interview and even the adverts are so obviously carefully and lovingly selected and formatted. My current project takes inspiration from an advert, and an article on yarn from 2 different issues, using the ‘how to size your own pattern’ from a third!
3. It is better than a “knit’n'natter” session with your friends, as it fits in a bag, requires no notice, and can tuck up in bed with you, offering you reassurance, comfort, inspiration, and a little nudge when you need a boost to take you to the next level. I think this is an inspirational magazine for yarn artists, rather than just the fun knitter who looks for a bit of relief, or a bit of a dabble - a kind of intermediate version - so for those of us who don’t need to be told in every issue “how to cast on”, but are curious about where to go……. next.
4. I don’t subscribe as it is a JOY to pay full amount to you rather than the bulk-subscribe-discount.
5. please don’t change……. ;o)

3 reasons:
My hubby stops by barnes & noble to buy yarn/knitting mags to bring home for me. all i have to say is to get the good ones, and he always brings home yarn forward. :0) even a nonknitter can tell

i love the patterns…and regret not finding the magazine at the beginning of its publication

and the options given for yarn choices. it helps me use stash or know exactly what i am shopping for

Pauline Sheppard 07.25.09 at 9:51 am

1. I like that you don’t have pages and pages of adverts but you do provide information on where we can purchase the yarn.
2. I like that you do patterns for all the family.
3. I like that each issue contains something easy, something in the middle and something challenging - something for everyong and something for every mood.

1) Pattern written with love and( as I feel) made espacially for me and interesting artichles about people behind the skeins and patterns.
2) Pattern for normally people and fuller figures combined with elegance.
3) Yarn choices for everone, rich or poor!

One should always pretend one is travelling and make the purchase on the spot. I did not purchase your Issue #2 of Inside Crochet that was available in May. That burgandy cloche hat will now join the long list of ‘wish I had done it at the time’.

Gail 08.19.09 at 1:34 pm

1. I love the magazine because you give alternative yarns according to the individual’s budget. It is often quite daunting when one wants to knit a garment but finds the price prohibitive.
2. There are always up to date patterns that will or are already classics.
3. Thank you for showing techniques that have been forgotten or some of which I have not come across.
