by Shannon on June 15, 2009

We have three randomly-selected winners in the Yarn Forward yarn giveaway, plus a special prize for making us laugh so hard!

Congratulations to Yve (comment #9), Cathy (comment #56) and Lynne (comment #99), and the special “wow!” prize to Susetheslowknitta for writing us a sonnet (comment #45).

And thank you again to everyone who wrote in — your kind comments really meant a lot to us, and they’ve helped us learn more about what it is you like to see in the magazine.

YF yarn giveaway!

by Shannon on May 11, 2009

Want some yarn? All you need to do is to leave us a comment with the 3 reasons you read YARN forward, and we’ll pick 3 winners who will each receive a bag of yarn from our sample box. (If you think your stash is bad, imagine ours!)

The fine print:

  • No guarantees what you’ll get, we make the selections.
  • International readers can enter too, but yarn will be posted via surface mail.
  • “Because it’s amazing and great” will win our love but dig a little deeper, will you? ;)

Good luck!

Model village knitted from wool

by Shannon on April 28, 2009

From Telegraph.co.uk:

A model village which took 23 years to create entirely from wool has gone on sale.

Many of the landmarks of Mersham near Ashford in Kent – population 1,022 – have been knitted by members of the village’s Afternoon Club since 1986.

Creations include the local primary school, the church, both pubs, the local shop, residents playing cricket, and even some of the local teenagers smoking a cigarette outside the bus shelter.

Many of the houses have also been stitched, complete with flowers occupying the gardens and cars on the roads, to help capture a slice of everyday life of the village.

Thousands of hours of intricate handiwork have gone into creating the knitted village over the past 23 years by members of the 40-strong Afternoon Club.

Be sure to click through and look at the pictures, it’s amazing!

Always keep your knitting near!

by Shannon on April 8, 2009

One bright spot in the news about the recent Italian earthquake: a 98-year-old woman pulled alive from the rubble spent her time knitting and crocheting while waiting to be saved.

From the Telegraph:

Maria D’Antuono told rescuers that during the 30 hours she was trapped, she occupied herself by knitting and doing crochet. The stone house where the 98-year-old was buried under her bed in the village of Tempera, was a scene of devastation having completely collapsed on one side.

Let this be a lesson to you — always keep your knitting nearby, you never know what might happen and it’s good to be prepared!

Terry Pratchett interview continued…

by Shannon on March 12, 2009

Never let it be said I am not responsive to emails! After a few pleading emails from subscribers who already received issue 12 in the post (many of them attempting to wrest back their copy from their significant other), I am posting the promised remainder of the Terry Pratchett interview here early.

But first — a little background for those of you who either haven’t received your copy yet, or who are coming here from a non-magazine-induced search. When Pratchett was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, members of the Ankh-Morpork Knitters’ Guild on knitting website Ravelry decided to team up to create an amazing handknit afghan for their favorite author, suitably named the Pratchgan. Here’s a photo of coordinator Shirley MacDonald (cherryred2001) presenting it to him, at left.

YF 12 preview is live!

by Shannon on March 11, 2009

Check it out here! I am in love with just about everything there but Liz Lovick’s jumper holds a special place in my heart, since it’s timed to coincide with 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibres.

In addition, you could apply these charted motifs to whatever you like to knit best, whether it’s scarves, hats or… There are rabbits, camels, yaks, sheep… you name it. It’s just lovely.

Darn it!

by Shannon on March 6, 2009

Following on our (needing to be darned!) heels of an issue or two ago, CRAFT’s blog has a feature for their March Mending Month series on darning. I have to say this is giving me a lot of inspiration — I have a beautiful Irish woven shawl in shades of red-violet bouclé yarn that has a big hole towards the bottom. While I’d been considering just patching it with a fabric flower or the like, I have to say that all this talk of darning is making me want to do that instead!

We have some surprises coming that I can’t talk about quite yet but that are very, very exciting for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is difficult to keep one’s mouth shut! One I can talk about, though, is KAL Media’s new crochet magazine Inside Crochet, which will be on newsstands this month. I have heard that the first cover is just astonishingly pretty. More on the rest when my lips are unsealed!
